Itinerary

Ikat Weavers from Alor, East Nusa Tenggara

DAY 1 : Kupang - Alor (B, L, D)

Pick up time: 06:30 AM at hotel NEO Kupang. Transfer to airport Kupang, flight Kupang (Timor) to Alor – Flight by Wings Air IW1943 08.40 – 09.20 Arrived in Alor airport (ARD), transfer in to Pulo Alor hotel. Driving about 5 – 10 minutes to the Museum and Kadelang traditional market. Visit 1000 Moko Museum to learn about the various collection of Ikat from each tribes in Alor. Continued by visiting Kadelang Traditional market that sell unique handicrafts of Alor. After lunch, visit the Hula Ikat workshop for organic Ikat to learn how to make Ikat from organic cotton & natural colourings. These weavers had won so many awards & they also had been invited to Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy. We also can cross to Ternate island (the original village of these weavers) to see more women weavers. Relaxing afternoon: free time to visit some beaches such as Sebanjar beach or Bota beach for swimming and relaxing. Overnight at Pulo Alor Hotel, Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 2 : Alor (B, L, D)

Driving to Monbang village is around 25 minutes, with hilly road. Visit Kabola tribe to see the making of traditional clothings from tree barks and traditional coffee processing. Continue to Kui tribe to see the making of Songket (supplementary weft weaving technique) from Southwest Alor. We also can visit one of the pearl farms run by Australian and Japanese companies. DAY 3 : Alor (B, L, D)

Visit Maritaing & Kolana area to learn Ikat from weavers from Eastern Alor, their patterns have some similarities with patterns from East Timor (Dilli) because their ancestors were related by blood. We can learn the uniqueness of their Ikat technique. Drive to Maritaing one way is about 3 hours. So, we better leave very early in the morning. Breakfast and lunches will be packed and we can have picnics on the way there. Overnight at Pulo Alor Hotel. Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 4 : Alor (B, L, D)

After breakfast at hotel, board the Liveaboard boat to Baranusa town in the center of Pantar island. The weavers in Pantar islands have their distinctive patterns for their supplementary weft and use bright colors. Sail to Kabir area in the Western Pantar. Overnight at Liveaboard boat.

DAY 5 : Alor (B, L, D)

After breakfast on the boat, we will visit the weavers in Kabir that use darker colors for their Ikat and embroidered/sewn shells into their Ikat as ornament. Then we will sail to Ternate island (the original village of weavers from Hula) to see more women weavers. We also can snorkel in Ternate island as the area has so many beautiful snorkelling spots. Return to Kalabahi and stay overnight at Pulo Alor hotel. Overnight at Pulo Alor Hotel. Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 6 : Alor - Timor (Kupang) (B, L, D)

Pick up time: Transfer to airport Alor to Kupang – Flight by Wings Air IW1942 09.40 – 10.20. After breakfast, today you will be transferred to airport to catch your flight to Kupang. Upon arrival in Kupang airport, we will drive to Amarasi village to see the traditional Amarasi Ikat and lunch will be serve as lunch box. Return to Kupang city. If we still have time, we can visit the Lasiana beach to see sunset and enjoy coconut water with traditional Rotenese snacks – pisang gepe – grilled banana topped with brown palm sugar. Overnight at NEO El Tari hotel. Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 7 : Kupang - So’e - Amanatun (B, L, D)

Drive to So’e city (around 2 hours) and continue to drive to Amanatun Utara (2,5 hours) to see the Amanatun weavers that has similar pattern with Boking weavers. We can learn how to make Buna supplementary weft weaving here. Overnight at Bahagia Hotel – So’e. Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 8 : So’e - Kefamenanu (B, L, D)

Drive to Kefamenanu (around 2 hours) and stop by in Biboki tribe (Temkessi villlage) to meet the weavers. We can learn how to make Sotis handwoven cloth here. Return to Kefamenanu town (2 hours drive). Overnight at Livero hotel. Standard/VIP Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 9 : Kefamenanu - Atambua - Melaka (B, L, D)

Drive to Duarato village (around 3 hours) and stop by to meet the weavers. We can learn how to make Tais handwoven cloth, a special Ikat by the Belunese tribe. Return to Atambua town (1,5 hours drive). Overnight at Atambua at Mentari hotel. Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 10 : Atambua - Kupang - Flores island (Maumere) (B, L, D)

Today you will be transferred to airport to catch your flight to Maumere. Pick up time: Flight to Kupang by Wings Air IW1932 at 09.40 – 10.25 Transit in Kupang before flight to Maumere – Flight by NAM Air IN-661 at 13.55 – 14.35 Upon arrival Maumere airport we will drive to Watublapi village (30 minutes drive) to see the making of Ikat with natural colors. Overnight at Amrita Maumere Resort. Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 11 : Flores (Maumere - Ende) (B, L, D)

Drive to Ndona (4,5 hours) to meet the Lio tribe weavers. Then rest in Kelimutu Eco Lodge or similar accommodation. Overnight at Kelimutu Ecolodge. Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 12 : Flores (Ende) (B, L ,D)

Drive to Kelimutu National Park to see the famous Kelimutu three-colored lakes (20 minutes). Enjoy magical sunrise here before returning to Kelimutu Ecolodge then drive to Nggela (50 minutes) to meet the Lio tribe weavers. Their traditional village was destroyed because of fire last year, and they still on their way to built it. Return to rest in Kelimutu Ecolodge. Overnight at Kelimutu Ecolodge. Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 13 : Flores (Ende) - Sumba island (Waingapu) (B, L, D)

Transfer to Ende airport then fly to East Sumba (Waingapu town) by Wings Air IW-1920 at 07.00 – 11.50. Arrived in Waingapu, visit Museum Tenun Ikat Sumba Timur to learn history and collection of Sumbanese ikat. Then continue to Lambanapu village (1 hour drive) to meet the ikat weavers from Paluanda Lama Hamu group. Overnight at Pondok Wisata Pantai Cemara bungalows. Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 14 : Sumba island (B, L, D)

Drive to to see more ikat weavers from different tribe in Kampong Raja Prailiu – a traditional Sumbanese kampong with original structures of traditional houses and megalithic culture. Continue to Watuhadang village to see the famous Savanah of Sumba island and visit the Umabara Kampong to meet the ikat weavers. Overnight at Pondok Wisata Pantai Cemara bungalows. Standard Room twin/double-shared.

DAY 15 : Sumba island - Bali (B)

After breakfast. Transfer to Waingapu airport for flights to Bali.
